The complete guide
Volleyball positions, explained
Six players on the court, five specialties. Here's what each one does and how to find yours.
Setter
The quarterback
Touches every second ball, decides who scores, calls the offense. Elite hands, elite IQ, calm under pressure.
Outside Hitter
The all-court attacker
Hits, passes, defends. Best-rounded skill set on the floor. Loves long rallies and hates specializing.
Opposite
Right-side power
Attacks from position 2, blocks the opponent's outside, gets the ball when the pass is broken. Usually the heaviest hitter.
Middle Blocker
The rim protector
Every block starts and ends with the middle. Runs quick attacks. Reactive footwork matters more than raw height.
Libero
The floor
Defensive specialist. Doesn't attack in front of the 3m line, but touches almost every back-court ball. Reads earlier than anyone.
